The model policy introduced in Ohio restricts student cellphone use during school hours, prohibiting their use on school premises during learning time. Students must store their cellphones securely in lockers, backpacks, or provided storage devices.
Key Highlights:
If a student violates the rule, the model policy suggests disciplinary actions such as:
– Giving the student a verbal warning and requiring the student to store the cell phone according to policy.
– Securely storing the student’s cell phone in a teacher- or administrator-controlled location for the class duration.
– Placing the cell phone in the school’s central office for the rest of the day.
– Having the parent or guardian pick up the student’s cell phone from the central office.
– Scheduling a conference with the student’s parent or guardian to discuss cellphone use.
Students are exempt from the cell phone policy if they require a cellphone for an Individual Education Program (IEP) or health monitoring.
The model policy, mandated by HB 250, will be effective from January 1, 2025. All schools must adopt cell phone policies by July 2025, either by following the model policy or creating their own in compliance with HB 250.
