Extreme Illnesses Force Some Schools to Close as Respiratory Viruses Spike

Schools across Northwest Ohio are facing closures and reduced attendance as a surge in upper respiratory illnesses spreads through the region. Local doctors report a significant increase in cases, with influenza leading the outbreak, along with RSV, rhinovirus, enterovirus, and COVID-19.

The spike in illnesses has forced schools like St. Benedict Catholic School in Toledo and Holy Trinity Catholic School in Swanton to close until Thursday to prevent further spread. According to Dr. Ryan Johnston, an Emergency Room physician at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, these seasonal spikes are common, but the flu is currently the most prevalent virus affecting the community.

Classroom environments, where students are in close contact, create ideal conditions for viruses to spread quickly. To help curb infections, doctors emphasize the importance of hand hygiene, disinfecting surfaces, avoiding face-touching, and staying home when sick—especially for young children, older adults, and those at high risk.
