Ohio Launches Reach Out and Read Program to Strengthen Children’s Health and Early Learning

Reach Out and Read Ohio has launched a statewide affiliate aimed at improving children’s access to early literacy support while strengthening their rights to development and good health through integration with pediatric care.
The initiative builds on more than three decades of work across Ohio and brings together a unified system that delivers early learning resources during routine well-child visits. Through the program, pediatric clinicians provide age-appropriate books, model shared reading, and offer guidance to caregivers on how to support children’s development from birth.
From a child rights perspective, the program emphasizes two critical areas: the right to education and the right to survival, which includes access to good health and supportive environments. By introducing reading early in life, the initiative supports language acquisition, cognitive development, and emotional bonding between children and their caregivers. These early interactions are seen as essential to preparing children for school and long-term learning.
The program also addresses health and well-being by strengthening caregiver-child relationships, which contribute to emotional security and developmental stability. Experts say that consistent engagement between caregivers and children during early years plays a key role in shaping both mental and physical development.
Executive Director Steven M. Lake, Ed.D., CFRE, noted that many parents are eager to support their children but may lack access to structured early learning resources. He explained that the statewide model is designed to ensure families receive consistent, relationship-based support during critical developmental stages.
Data cited by the organization shows that while more than 60 percent of children in Ohio are not fully prepared for kindergarten, nearly 90 percent attend regular pediatric visits, creating an opportunity to reach families where they already receive care.
By embedding early literacy within healthcare systems, Reach Out and Read Ohio aims to ensure that children across the state, regardless of background or location, have the foundational support needed to survive, grow, learn, and thrive.
