Franklin County Launches Urgent Child Safety Campaign Amid Rise in Deadly Drug Exposure Cases

Franklin County officials have launched a new child protection campaign aimed at reducing rising cases of deadly accidental drug exposure involving children in the home.

Franklin County Children’s Services says the county has recorded an increase in incidents where children come into contact with dangerous substances, including fentanyl residue, prescription medication, and cannabis products. Many of these cases are reported as accidental but have led to severe harm and, in some situations, death.

The awareness campaign, titled “Lock it Up, Clean it Up and Put it Away,” also referred to as “Up, Up and Away,” focuses on preventing access to harmful substances in households. Officials say the initiative is designed to encourage safe storage practices and reduce risks faced by young children.

Child protection authorities report receiving more than 1,000 hotline calls this year alone related to substance exposure concerns in homes. Officials warn that children under five years old are especially vulnerable due to their natural curiosity and tendency to touch or ingest objects within reach.

Safety partners in the campaign include law enforcement agencies, public health departments, addiction services, and child welfare organisations. They aim to promote a coordinated response to prevent further incidents.

Officials highlighted cases where even trace exposure to toxic substances has led to fatal outcomes, stressing that many of these tragedies are preventable with basic safety steps.

Parents and caregivers are being advised to store all substances securely, clean contaminated surfaces properly, and ensure hazardous items are kept out of children’s reach.

The campaign also encourages families to seek support for addiction-related challenges while reinforcing a shared responsibility to protect children and strengthen home safety.
