Ohio County Plans Safety Initiative to Keep Firearms and Dangerous Medicines Away From Children

Health officials in Jefferson County, Ohio, are proposing a new safety initiative to protect children and teenagers by encouraging families to securely store firearms and potentially dangerous medications.

The proposal was presented to county commissioners on October 8, 2026, and is linked to the Stored Safe Communities programme run by the Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The initiative encourages communities to adopt safer storage practices and prevent children from accessing potentially lethal items at home.

Jefferson County Health Commissioner Andrew Henry said the proposed initiative would support the county’s health improvement plan, particularly its focus on mental health.

He explained that restricting young people’s access to firearms and medications could help protect adolescents, especially those experiencing mental health difficulties.

County Commissioner Jake Kleineke also encouraged residents to review how potentially dangerous items are stored in their homes, emphasising that firearms should be securely locked away and kept out of children’s reach.

The initiative is still in its planning stages. Henry said officials would next seek funding for educational materials and lock boxes designed to secure firearms and dangerous medications.

If funding becomes available, health officials plan to incorporate firearm safety education into existing community outreach programmes, including local health fairs. They also hope to distribute safety lock boxes during these events.

Officials stressed that the initiative is not intended to prevent residents from legally owning firearms. Instead, it focuses on responsible storage and reducing children’s access to dangerous items.

For families, the proposal highlights an important safety message: securely storing firearms and medications can help prevent accidental injuries and reduce the risk of harm to children and teenagers.

Health officials hope that increased awareness and practical safety measures will help create safer homes and communities throughout Jefferson County.
