Ohio School Official Jailed for Stealing Nearly $500,000, Depriving Children of Educational Resources

Ohio authorities are seeking to recover nearly $500,000 stolen from a Columbus charter school by its former business manager, in a case that has raised concerns about financial accountability and the protection of resources intended for children’s education.

According to an audit released by the Ohio Auditor of State, Michelle Scott, former business manager of Westside Academy in Columbus’ Hilltop neighbourhood, misappropriated more than $480,100 over four and a half years.

Investigators discovered that Scott created fictitious purchase orders, diverted payments into personal bank accounts and manipulated reimbursement records.

The investigation also uncovered more than $53,000 in unauthorised credit card expenses, including purchases from Amazon and Apple, craft supplies and hotel accommodation.

Scott pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony in March 2026 and was sentenced to between four and six years in prison. A court also ordered her to pay $363,384.44 in restitution.

Westside Academy Director Heather O’Bannon described Scott’s actions as a betrayal of trust, saying the misconduct deprived students of valuable educational resources.

The school’s management has pledged to strengthen financial accountability and recover the stolen funds.

The state audit identified inadequate internal financial controls and weak management oversight as factors that enabled the misconduct.

Authorities have recommended improvements in procurement, expenditure monitoring, recordkeeping and school governance.

For children and families, the case highlights how financial misconduct in educational institutions can threaten resources meant to support learning, while underscoring the responsibility of school authorities to safeguard public education funds.
