Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne has said the latest 2023 Child Fatality Report is heartbreaking, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the rising number of child deaths. The report revealed 190 child fatalities in 2022, significantly higher than the county’s 10-year average of 174.
Most deaths were linked to infant mortality, primarily from premature births, and homicides, often related to abuse and gun violence. The report highlighted the disproportionate impact on Black children, who experience higher mortality rates than their white peers. While the overall infant mortality rate in Cuyahoga County is 8.8 per 1,000 births, it jumps to 15.9 among Black infants.
Black teens, particularly those aged 15–17, face even graver risks, being 60 times more likely to die from gun violence-related homicides.
“These numbers are not just statistics,” Ronayne stated. “Every number represents a young life cut short. It’s our shared responsibility to ensure all children have the opportunity to grow and thrive.”
The report serves as a rallying cry for health officials, policymakers, and the community at large to take bold, unified action to combat these preventable tragedies.
