Cincinnati Teachers Report Low Attendance, Say Students Are ‘Living in Fear’ of ICE

Teachers at Cincinnati Public Schools say many immigrant students have been too afraid to attend classes since President Donald Trump took office earlier this month, fearing potential action from immigration officers.
“Families and parents are writing me saying they don’t want to send their children to school,” said Rachel Von Holle, an English language teacher, during a school board meeting. More than 3,600 students in the district—over 1 in 10—are English language learners. “Families are scared, and I feel helpless,” she added.
Despite these concerns, the school district has yet to provide clear guidance to teachers on handling potential immigration enforcement on campus. A recent public statement reaffirmed that law enforcement is not allowed on school property without proper legal authorization, such as a court order, subpoena, or warrant. The district also stated it does not ask for or keep records of students’ immigration status.
