Mahoning County Seeks More Foster Caregivers as Children Need Safe Homes
Mahoning County Children Services in Ohio is calling for more foster caregivers as the agency struggles to find enough safe homes for children removed from situations involving abuse and neglect.
The agency said the need for foster placements remains urgent, with children sometimes entering care unexpectedly during emergency situations. Officials explained that while the goal is to keep children with relatives or familiar adults, some children require temporary homes when those options are unavailable.
According to Children Services leaders, about 200 children are currently in care, while only 42 licensed foster homes are available. Many existing caregivers have reached capacity due to ongoing commitments to children already placed with them.
The shortage has forced the agency to place some children outside Mahoning County, making it more difficult for them to maintain regular contact with family members during reunification efforts.
Officials stressed that foster care plays an important role in child protection by providing stability, care, and support for children during difficult periods.
They encouraged more residents to consider becoming foster caregivers, noting that many people who believe they are ineligible may qualify after completing required training.
The agency said foster caregivers are needed for different situations, including caring for sibling groups and teenagers.
Children Services leaders emphasised that having more local foster homes would help children remain connected to their families and communities while receiving the care they need.
