Ohio is taking a bold step in prioritizing student eye care with Gov. Mike DeWine’s proposed OhioSEE program in the 2026-27 budget plan. The initiative aims to go beyond basic vision screenings, ensuring students receive comprehensive eye exams and access to glasses.

Cari VanPelt, optician and office manager for the Cincinnati Health Department’s vision centers, emphasized the gap in care:
“Many kids in the State of Ohio are required to get a vision screening, which only tests for distance acuities. But many need way more than that.”

VanPelt’s team at the Scheff Wellness Center, the first school-based vision center in the nation, provides in-depth eye exams and glasses daily. Transportation is arranged for Cincinnati Public School and charter school students to ensure access to care.
