City and school officials in Celina aim to continue their successful partnership placing a police officer in Celina City School, which has proven beneficial over the past three years. However, due to new police union agreements, the cost is expected to rise significantly to approximately $113,000 annually, according to Celina Police Chief Tom Wale.
Key Highlight:
- Under the current city-school agreement, the district covers 75% of the school resource officer’s total compensation and benefits, amounting to $91,233 for the 2021-2022 school year, funded by federal grants.
- To renew the arrangement, school officials requested the city to apply for a federal COPS Hiring Program grant, which would only cover a portion of the expenses. City councilors approved this request, aiming to ease the financial burden on the school.
- Negotiations would determine the remaining costs, with the possibility of the school covering up to 100%. Some councilors expressed support for continuing the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
- Nate Miller currently serves as the SRO at Celina City Schools, playing a crucial role in maintaining school safety and enforcing criminal law. Former superintendent Ken Schmiesing highlighted Miller’s positive impact on school functioning and reduced incident reports.
