A 15-year-old boy, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner as Darnell Haynes, was shot and killed late Friday night, July 18, during what Cleveland police described as an unpermitted block party on the city’s east side.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire on the 16400 block of Highview Drive just before midnight and found a 17-year-old girl with a graze wound. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Nearby, Darnell Haynes was discovered lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital by EMS but was later pronounced dead. Two others, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, arrived at separate hospitals shortly after the incident with gunshot wounds.

Cleveland police said a large, unauthorized gathering was taking place in the area at the time. The case remains under investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit, and no arrests have been made.

This tragedy highlights the violation of the fundamental right of these children to life and to protect them from physical violence.
