A crash involving a school bus and a car in Marion County on Wednesday afternoon left 19 children injured, though all injuries were reported as non-life threatening. Police reported that the bus and a car were attempting to enter an intersection simultaneously, resulting in the collision. The police department cited the driver of the car for failing to yield at the intersection.
Brett Gorrell, whose three daughters were on the bus, described the moment he heard the news:
“They said it’s an emergency, my kids are in a crash. The first thing that comes to my mind is, ‘Oh my gosh.
Major BJ Gruber of the Marion Police Department explained that there is uncertainty about the color of the traffic light during the crash. In his words, “they would’ve both had green lights or red lights. When you take that off the table, you look at who has a duty to yield.”
Superintendent Brian Murphy of Marion City Schools on the other hand, emphasized their commitment to safety, adding that the district has outstanding drivers, and their buses are safe. It was an unfortunate incident and happy with how their administrative team and police handled it. At the moment, the school bus driver is on administrative leave with pay as the investigation continues.
