Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is observed every October to raise awareness about domestic violence and support survivors. Established by Congress in 1989, the campaign encourages organizations and individuals to unite in amplifying the needs and experiences of survivors. For DVAM 2024, the Domestic Violence Awareness Project continues with the theme “Heal, Hold & Center,” which emphasizes the importance of healing from violence, supporting survivors, and prioritizing marginalized communities. The initiative highlights the connection between survivor justice and racial justice, particularly for those affected by anti-Blackness and other forms of oppression.

Key Highlight:

  • This year’s National Call for Unity encourages “Connective Action” in line with the DVAM 2024 theme, “Heal, Hold & Center.” It serves as a moment for advocates and survivors to recognize and unite in their efforts against domestic violence. Participants are invited to celebrate individuals who exemplify these values and to post their commitments to connective action on social media using the hashtag #CallforUnity throughout October.
  • During the kickoff for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), community leaders, survivors, and advocates gathered to emphasize the importance of unity in addressing domestic violence. The event highlighted the theme “Everyone Knows Someone,” reflecting the pervasive impact of domestic violence in society.
  • Key speakers included the founder of Ohio Women Against Domestic Violence, who called for greater community involvement and support to combat the rising homicide rates linked to domestic violence. Pastor Michael Young opened the event with a prayer, emphasizing the need for healing and unity.
  • Attorney Zach Klein discussed the importance of holding abusers accountable and provided updates on the efforts of the domestic violence and stalking unit within the city attorney’s office. He praised the dedicated staff and encouraged the community to recognize and support survivors, reinforcing a collective commitment to raising awareness and addressing domestic violence effectively.
  • The speaker addresses the complexities of navigating civil protection orders and the criminal justice system regarding domestic violence. They highlight the collaboration among various partners, including the Franklin County prosecutor’s office, local law enforcement, courts, and community organizations, emphasizing their collective efforts through the “Blueprint for Safety” initiative. This initiative takes a holistic approach to addressing domestic violence, meeting monthly to tackle active cases, close system gaps, and secure funding. The speaker notes the staggering statistic of 6,000 domestic violence cases reported annually, urging community awareness and action. They stress the importance of being proactive in addressing domestic violence, as many defendants involved in related homicides had minimal prior interactions with the justice system. The call to action encourages friends and family to support victims, fostering a community that stands against domestic violence.
  • During an event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the speaker emphasizes the importance of community in addressing domestic violence. They reflect on the harsh realities faced by survivors and honor their courage, as well as the dedication of advocates who support them. The speaker highlights that domestic violence is a prevalent issue in Columbus, with 21% of homicides linked to it this year. They stress the need to break the silence surrounding this issue and advocate for stronger protections for victims.
  • The message calls for community action, urging everyone to spread awareness, volunteer, and offer support to those in need. The speaker concludes by recognizing the work of partners and advocates who strive to prevent domestic violence and ensure a safer environment for all. Director Relle Pride then takes the stage to further discuss the importance of supporting vulnerable individuals and the collective mission to prevent future domestic violence incidents.
  • Dr. Shironda Palmore from the Center for Family Safety and Healing emphasized that leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous time, and survivors need ongoing support and safety planning. Dr. Maria Houston Beck from LSS Choices, the only domestic violence shelter in Franklin County, underscored the importance of providing not just shelter, but also legal advocacy and emotional support. She shared a hopeful story of a survivor reclaiming her life after years of abuse.
  • During a recent discussion on domestic violence, speakers emphasized the extensive impact of this issue, noting that it affects not only victims but also their families, friends, and communities. The ripple effects can lead to a cycle of trauma that spans generations. It was highlighted that domestic violence is often not an isolated incident but part of a larger pattern of escalating abuse.
  • A key focus was on the importance of holding offenders accountable while ensuring the safety and support of survivors. The speaker from the prosecutor’s office shared their commitment to guiding survivors through the legal process and connecting them with resources to escape abusive situations. Advocates also stressed that domestic violence is a public crisis, not just a personal issue. Statistics reveal that one in four women and one in seven men experience severe intimate partner violence, which has far-reaching effects on healthcare, homelessness, and economic productivity.
  • Calls to action included the necessity of speaking out, educating oneself about the warning signs of abuse, and holding leaders accountable for policies that protect victims. Survivors were encouraged to share their stories and seek support, while the importance of community engagement and collaboration among various organizations was underscored.
  • As part of the event, attendees honored victims of domestic violence with a moment of silence and the release of balloons, symbolizing remembrance. Acknowledgment was given to local organizations and leaders who support victims and advocate for change. The event concluded with a call for continued community engagement and collaboration to ensure safety and respect for all individuals.
