Spotlight of the Week: Dr. Kevin Dixon – Champion for Community and Cultural Engagement
Dr. Kevin Dixon, former Vice President of Community and Cultural Engagement at the Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board of Franklin County, dedicated over three decades to enhancing mental health services and promoting cultural competence within the community. His retirement in January 2021 marked the culmination of a distinguished career committed to empowering individuals and families, particularly those from marginalized communities.
His journey at ADAMH in the public affairs department, leveraging his expertise from Temple University and WDAS FM radio in Philadelphia. Rising to his current role, he has spearheaded innovative programs and initiatives that prioritize cultural competence and community voices.
Key Achievements and Programs
- Empowering Voices through Advocacy: Dr. Dixon established the Consumer and Family Advisory Council (CFAC), ensuring individuals in recovery and their families have a direct role in shaping behavioral health services in Franklin County.
- Mental Health First Aid Initiatives: Under his leadership, Franklin County gained access to Mental Health First Aid training. These programs equip community members to identify and respond to signs of mental health challenges, fostering earlier interventions and stronger support systems.
- Transforming School-Based Mental Health Services: Dr. Dixon facilitated the launch of ADAMH-funded prevention services in public schools, supporting students, families, and teachers. These initiatives address emotional well-being, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol education, and early intervention for at-risk students.
- Bridging Faith and Mental Health: By partnering with NAMI Franklin County, Dr. Dixon created an annual Faith Symposium that connects faith leaders with resources and training on mental health, addiction recovery, and self-care.
- Pioneering Cultural Competence Training: Dr. Dixon has been a consistent advocate for cultural awareness in mental health care. Through collaborations with The Ohio State College of Social Work, he has facilitated impactful training for behavioral health providers to deliver culturally sensitive care.
- Supporting Young Black Leaders: The Black Community Ambassadors Support Program, launched under Dr. Dixon’s guidance, provides vital resources and support groups for young Black leaders. This initiative adapted during the pandemic to address emerging challenges and continues to be a beacon of empowerment and resilience.
