With 51 school bus crashes already reported in Ohio just three weeks into 2025, lawmakers are introducing new legislation to improve student safety.
The latest incident occurred Friday morning in Cleveland, where a school bus crash sent a 9-year-old girl and a 33-year-old woman to the hospital with minor injuries.
Safety advocate Rudy Breglia of the School Bus Safety Alliance stressed that “current Ohio school bus safety features are inadequate.” In response, State Reps. Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and Bernie Willis (R-Springfield) introduced H.B. 3, a bill that would establish a $25 million school bus safety fund to improve and upgrade equipment. Schools could apply for grants to purchase illuminated stop arms, external cameras, seatbelts, and other safety upgrades.
The bill also raises penalties for illegally passing a school bus, increasing fines up to $1,000 for first-time offenders and $2,000 for repeat violations. Repeat offenders could also face license suspension and a mandatory safety course. Revenue from fines would help fund the grant program.
