Ohio’s Transgender Bathroom Ban for Schools Takes Effect This Week

A new Ohio law restricting transgender students from using school restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity goes into effect Tuesday.

Signed by Gov. Mike DeWine in November, the law requires students at K-12 public schools and both public and private colleges to use facilities matching their gender assigned at birth. It also prohibits students from sharing overnight accommodations with peers of the opposite sex as assigned at birth in K-12 schools.

The law does allow for single-occupancy restrooms and makes exceptions for caregivers assisting people with disabilities or young children under 10.

Advocates warn of the law’s impact. “Any policy that requires faculty to monitor students’ bathroom usage is just bizarre and creepy,” said Dara Adkison, executive director of TransOhio. “Many schools are simply more focused on students’ education than monitoring their bathroom use.”
