Ohio GOP Backtracks on Cutting Public School Funding

Ohio Republican leaders have abandoned plans to cut public education funding after facing significant backlash, spurred by extensive media coverage and internal criticism from party members.
Ohio’s challenges with school funding date back to 1997, when the state Supreme Court ruled in DeRolph v. State that its reliance on property taxes for school funding was unconstitutional. Despite decades of legislative efforts, the system has remained under scrutiny, with the Ohio Education Association and lawmakers across party lines continuing to assert its unconstitutionality.
Some Republicans claim that the current system cannot be deemed unconstitutional since it does not explicitly violate a court ruling. However, others argue that the core issues highlighted in DeRolph remain unresolved.
While the debate continues, bipartisan efforts to reform Ohio’s school funding system have persisted, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing this longstanding challenge.
