Four Children and 26 Cats Removed From Ohio Home Described by Police as “A Complete Landfill”

Authorities in Shadyside, Ohio, removed four children and 26 cats from a residence after police said they discovered severe living conditions during a response late Tuesday.

According to the Shadyside Police Department, officers found the home in a state they described as “a complete landfill,” citing extensive clutter, unsanitary conditions, and concerns for health and safety. As a result, the children were taken from the home, and Child Protective Services responded as part of the investigation.

Animal welfare officials were also contacted. Belmont County Hoof & Paw confirmed that all 26 cats would be removed from the residence and placed into appropriate care.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the case. Police said James “Douglass” Groh was charged with endangering children and domestic violence. Deborah Groh was charged with endangering children.

Authorities have not released further details about the condition of the children or the animals at the time they were removed, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The case remains under review by law enforcement and child welfare officials. Further information is expected as court proceedings move forward.
