Ohio Mobilises Free Meals to Support Children During School Break

As schools close for the summer break, efforts are underway in Ohio to ensure that children continue to have access to nutritious food, a critical component of their right to survival, health, and development.
The Ohio government, in partnership with the Ohio Association of Foodbanks and the Children’s Hunger Alliance, has launched a public awareness campaign encouraging families to utilise free meal programmes and food assistance services available across the state. The initiative aims to support children who may lose access to school-provided meals during the holiday period.
From a child protection perspective, access to adequate nutrition is essential for children’s wellbeing. Food insecurity can affect physical health, learning outcomes, emotional development, and overall quality of life. For many vulnerable children, school meals provide a reliable source of daily nutrition, making school breaks a particularly challenging period for families already facing economic hardship.
Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel emphasised that children can access free and healthy meals throughout the summer at designated community locations. In addition, eligible families can benefit from Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) programmes, which provide grocery assistance to help keep food on the table.
Child rights advocates have welcomed the initiative, noting that every child has the right to adequate food and nutrition under international child rights standards. They argue that programmes that address hunger not only support children’s survival but also promote healthy growth and development.
As communities prepare for the summer months, stakeholders continue to encourage families to take advantage of available resources. They stress that protecting children from hunger is a shared responsibility and a vital investment in their future wellbeing.
