Ohio Man Sentenced 40 Years for Abusing Four Children
A 40-year prison term has been handed down in federal court to a man from Ohio who sexually exploited and abused four children in a case that underscores the need for better protection against child sexual exploitation.
Shannon McTighe, 46, of Thornville, pleaded guilty Tuesday in the U.S. District Court to three felony counts of sexual exploitation of children. He was also ordered to pay a life sentence of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
The abuse started in 2019 when the youngest of the children involved was approximately 7 years old, according to federal court documents. Investigators also said that McTighe had approximately 300,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse, including newly created material with children to whom he had access.
The investigation started in May 2025 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received seven cyber-tips relating to the same telephone number. Investigators followed the number to hundreds of files posted on the Internet and connected McTighe to an address in Perry County.
On June 11, 2025, he was arrested by federal agents in Canton, and during the investigation, he was found with several electronic devices and other evidence.
The case illustrates the need to recognise and report online exploitation in a timely fashion from a child protection perspective, especially when children are at risk from adults who have direct access to them.
The investigation also illustrates the role of digital evidence and cyber-tip reporting in the identification of children who might be sexually exploited and the linkage to protection services.
In addition to the 40-year sentence, child protection responses should focus on the safety, privacy, recovery and access to appropriate long-term support of the children affected as they rebuild their lives.
