Ohio Head Start Gets $2.05M Boost After Years of Funding Turmoil Threatened Services for Children
Ohio’s Head Start programs will receive an additional $2.05 million in federal funds to enhance services for young children and families.
The money comes from $225 million in supplemental awards announced earlier this month by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families.
Nationwide, $89 million of the funding is being allocated to over 400 Head Start grant recipients. In Ohio, 17 programmes will get grants from $11,800 to over $400,000.
The money will be used for items such as equipment for the kitchen and facilities, nutrition programmes, cooking classes and other services designed to enhance the experiences of children and families.
In 2024, federal data shows that over 33,000 children participated in Ohio Head Start programmes. The programmes also reached 1,741 children in foster care and 1,660 children who are homeless.
Programmes had to prove a need in the community and that the grants would not be duplicative, Julie Stone, executive director of the Ohio Head Start Association, said.
The funding is a new investment following years of uncertainty, including during the federal government shutdown in 2025. About 65,000 children in 140 Head Start programmes across the country were impacted by the shutdown, including programmes in Ohio.
Head Start also faces proposed federal changes that would reduce administrative and compliance requirements. Some federal requirements for curricula, parent committees, family engagement and service delivery would be eliminated in the draft rules.
Childhood education advocates have expressed worries about the changes impacting developmental screenings, teacher qualifications and mental health services. The proposal is open for public comment until October 6.
