International Day of the Girl 2026: UNICEF Calls for an End to Child Marriage
The world marks International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2026, with a call to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights, as millions of girls continue to face barriers to education, safety and personal development.
According to UNICEF’s 2026 estimates, approximately 650 million women and girls alive today were married before turning 18. Each year, more than 12 million girls are married during childhood, equivalent to roughly one every three seconds.
UNICEF warns that child marriage can deprive girls of their childhood, limit their educational opportunities and expose them to serious health risks, violence and emotional distress. Girls living in conflict-affected communities and areas experiencing displacement are particularly vulnerable.
The organisation also reports that nearly one in four ever-married or partnered girls aged 15 to 19 have experienced intimate partner violence during their lifetime. Meanwhile, adolescent girls are twice as likely as boys to be outside education, employment or training.
This year’s theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” highlights the urgent need for governments, communities and families to protect girls and provide opportunities for them to thrive.
UNICEF says progress is possible, noting that investments in girls’ education, legal reforms and social protection have helped prevent an estimated 68 million child marriages over the past 25 years.
The organisation is calling for stronger laws, improved access to education and healthcare, and community efforts to challenge harmful practices that threaten girls’ futures.
As the world observes the day, UNICEF urges everyone to amplify girls’ voices, support their leadership and ensure they participate in decisions affecting their lives.
The goal is to ensure every girl can learn, grow and choose her future freely.
