5,500 Children Receive Free Winter Coats as Ohio Charity Supports Families Ahead of Cold Season

About 5,500 children across central Ohio have received brand-new winter coats through a charitable initiative aimed at keeping children warm and protected as colder weather approaches.

Bonzy Charities organised its eighth annual coat drive on Thursday, 5 November 2026, distributing free coats to pupils across eight schools in the region.

The initiative, organised in partnership with Operation Warm, seeks to ensure children have appropriate clothing during winter, particularly as families face the financial demands of providing essential items.

Doug Godard, founder and president of Bonzy Charities, explained that the initiative goes beyond protecting children from cold temperatures. He said providing coats also helps build children’s confidence, dignity and sense of belonging.

Recalling an experience from the previous year, Godard described seeing two young girls arrive at school wearing only T-shirts beneath a shared blanket.

He expressed satisfaction that the children were subsequently able to choose their preferred coats with assistance from volunteers.

The experience, he explained, reinforced his commitment to ensuring children have access to suitable winter clothing.

According to WCMH, the organisation partnered with Operation Warm to purchase the coats distributed during this year’s exercise.

Beyond providing warmth, access to appropriate winter clothing can help children participate comfortably in school activities and reduce concerns about exposure to harsh weather.

The annual initiative highlights how community organisations and charitable partnerships can contribute to children’s welfare by addressing basic needs that some families may struggle to meet.
