Introduction:
Substance abuse remains a persistent issue in our communities, often with far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the individuals involved. Abuse of fentanyl could lead to a heightened risk of overdose and death due to its potency.
The Incident:
Last Wednesday, 38-year-old Cameron Cothran of Bellaire dropped off his one-year-old daughter at East Ohio Regional Hospital and left. The baby was covered in a substance that turned out to be fentanyl, which resulted in a cardiac arrest.
The Impact:
Due to the neglect of Cameron Cothran, the life of his one-year-old daughter was lost. This would have been prevented if his parental right were taken since he was a serial offender and posed a threat to the life of his child. A grand jury indicted Cameron Cothran on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He was already charged with child endangerment, drug possession and evidence tampering.
A Call to Action:
In light of these events, it is imperative that stakeholders in the lives of children take proactive steps to address substance abuse within their communities. This includes the Child Protective Service paying regular visit to homes of parents to ensure the safety and protection of children.
