Black Child Development Institute – Ohio and the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank Call on Book Lovers to Help Put Stories Into Children’s Hands

A child’s first book can do more than teach letters. It can spark confidence. It can reflect identity. It can quietly say, you belong here.

That’s the heart behind an upcoming volunteer evening hosted by Black Child Development Institute – Ohio in partnership with the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank. This is not just another community service event. It’s a hands-on opportunity to help close the literacy gap, one book at a time.

Across Ohio, thousands of children grow up without books at home. For many families, access to diverse, high-quality children’s literature is limited.

When children cannot see themselves in stories or explore worlds beyond their immediate surroundings, opportunity narrows. Literacy is not just about reading. It’s about imagination, identity, and future pathways.

During this evening of purpose and connection, volunteers will sort and prepare books that will go directly into the hands of children and families who need them most. The books you touch, pack, and organize will land in classrooms, homes, and community spaces across the state.

And while the impact is serious, the atmosphere will be welcoming and energizing. Expect conversation. Expect collaboration. Expect food and refreshments. Educators, advocates, parents, professionals, and community leaders will gather not just to serve, but to connect around a shared belief: every child deserves access to stories that affirm and inspire them.

You do not need special skills. You only need a willingness to show up.

One evening. A few hours. Countless futures influenced.

If you believe literacy is equity, and representation matters, this is your invitation.

Volunteer. Connect. Advance literacy.
