Canton City Public Health Warns of an Increase in Positive West Nile Virus Mosquitos

Canton City Public Health (CCPH) has reported an increase in West Nile Virus (WNV) cases after two mosquito samples tested positive. These samples, collected in early July from Weis Park and near 11th Street and Whipple Avenue Southwest, bring the total number of positive tests to seven. WNV is a leading mosquito-borne illness in the U.S., and symptoms can include fever, headache, and rash. Although there are no human cases reported in Canton yet, CCPH is continuing its efforts to control mosquito populations through larviciding and removing stagnant water.

Protective Measures Against Mosquito Bites

• Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity (early morning and late evening).
• Use an approved insect repellant when outdoors.
• Wear lightweight long pants and shirts.
• Remove sources of stagnant water around your home and yard such as buckets, old tires, tarps, and other items that hold water.
• Change water in pet dishes daily.
• Drain and clean bird baths at least weekly.
• Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated with water circulating (even if not being used).
• Keep gutters clean.
• Repair window and door screens.
•  Remove old, unused tires to a legal tire disposal facility
