Carbon Monoxide Alarm Triggers Evacuation at Avon High School

Avon High School faced an unexpected disruption Thursday morning when a carbon monoxide alarm was triggered, prompting an immediate evacuation.
The call came in at 7:44 a.m., and within minutes, students and staff were safely outside as Avon Police, Avon Firefighters, and Columbia Gas officials responded to the scene on Detroit Road. After several hours of thorough checks, the building was cleared and the all-clear was given around 10 a.m.
Superintendent Mike Zalar commended the swift response and cooperation, emphasizing that student and staff safety remains the district’s top priority. He thanked everyone for their patience and support during what turned out to be a memorable first day of school.
This incident underscores that education is not just about classrooms and lessons, but also about the right of every student to learn in a safe and secure environment. Schools must always be places where safety and education go hand in hand.
