Columbus Alternative High School junior Benji Simmons recalls two childhood dreams involving frightening scenes with carrots. These dreams inspired her artwork, culminating in her acrylic painting titled “Dreams.” This piece will be displayed in the underground tunnel connecting the Verne Riffe Center to the Ohio Statehouse, where many will see it. Simmons expresses excitement about revisiting her painting and observing how others interpret it.

Simmons joins fellow students Isabella Figueroa, Sophia Bender, and Marlene Natividad Trinidad in the Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition, which showcases one student from each of Ohio’s 99 house districts. This initiative, launched by the Ohio Arts Council and other educational organizations, allows art teachers to select students’ works for a two-year display. Each participant receives $100, but the exhibition also offers significant exposure, allowing government officials to appreciate young talent. Cat Sheridan, director of the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery, emphasizes the importance of this opportunity for students’ recognition and support in their artistic journeys.

This is Figueroa’s second time participating in the Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition, where she feels a sense of community among her peers. She appreciates being selected alongside other talented Ohio artists. Northland art educator Chris Barr finds it rewarding to witness the growth of student artists through such exhibitions. He notes that students often discover new ideas and recognize their own talent when they see their work displayed with their peers.
