This week, we spotlight Owen Brockman, a 13-year-old musical sensation from Centerville, Ohio, whose remarkable talent with the banjo has earned him a national audience.
Owen’s journey with music began at the tender age of six with the piano, but three years ago, at a bluegrass festival in Miamisburg, he discovered his true passion for the banjo.
Owen’s dedication is evident; he practices for 90 minutes a day, sometimes even for seven hours during the summer. This hard work has paid off, landing him a feature on PBS’s new show, WoodSongs Kids, where he will showcase his talent and share his love for bluegrass music.
Beyond the accolades and recognition, Owen’s story is a testament to the importance of parental support in nurturing a child’s talents. His parents, who have a deep-seated love for music themselves, have encouraged both Owen and his younger brother Will, who plays the guitar, to pursue their passions.
As Owen’s father, Scott, wisely advises, “Find what you love and enjoy what you’re best at. If it winds up being music, great. If it winds up being a sport, great. Just find something you love.”
This philosophy is crucial for parents everywhere. Supporting and nurturing a child’s interest can lead to incredible personal fulfillment and achievements, as exemplified by Owen’s journey.
Owen’s message to aspiring musicians is simple yet profound: “I think you should do it because playing music is really the best thing you can do in life. You can play it forever.” His story is an inspiring reminder of the joy and lifelong benefits that come from pursuing what you love.
Parents, let Owen’s story be a call to action. Encourage your children’s interests, provide them with the tools they need, and watch them thrive. You never know; they might just take the national stage like Owen Brockman.
Stay tuned for Owen’s appearance on WoodSongs Kids and follow his musical journey with his local bluegrass band, Mark Whitt True Bluegrass.
Support and nurture your children’s talents—they could be the next Owen Brockman.
