The Columbus City Council passed a resolution recognizing the week starting April 11th as Black Maternal Health Week. The resolution also acknowledges the work of “CelebrateOne,” a local non-profit dedicated to promoting health care equity in Central Ohio, particularly in lowering the infant mortality rate.
According to the CDC, approximately 5 infants die per 1,000 births in the United States, with higher odds for Black women. Black women are roughly three times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related issues than their white peers, with 80 percent of those deaths being preventable. In Franklin County, African American babies are dying at twice the rate of white babies. The issue of racial disparities in maternal pregnancy health was discussed in a meeting, emphasizing the need for more diversity in the medical field to combat these disparities.
