Coach’s Lifesaving Action Shows Why Trusted Adults Are Vital for Child Safety

A high school football coach in Columbus, Ohio, is being praised for his swift and courageous actions after a student was shot outside a public library, an incident that underscores the critical role trusted adults play in safeguarding children and young people.
The student, who attends East High School, was shot last Thursday near the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Martin Luther King Branch after a disagreement with a 19-year-old suspect reportedly escalated. According to police reports, the suspect allegedly shot the student in the stomach during the confrontation.
Moments after the gunshots were heard, East High School head football coach Mike Bell rushed to the scene after recognising the voices involved. He found one of his players lying on the ground with a gunshot wound and immediately began providing lifesaving assistance. Bell applied pressure to the wound and continued talking to the injured student to keep him conscious and motivated until emergency responders arrived.
From a child protection and safeguarding perspective, the incident highlights the importance of protective adults in the lives of children. Coaches, teachers, and mentors often serve as trusted figures who can respond quickly in moments of crisis. Bell’s actions not only helped stabilise the injured student but also demonstrated the powerful role that supportive adults can play in protecting and advocating for children’s wellbeing.
The student was rushed to hospital and underwent four hours of surgery. He remains hospitalised but survived the attack, in part due to the rapid intervention.
Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old suspect who now faces a charge of felonious assault.
The incident also raises broader concerns about youth safety in community spaces and the need for stronger violence prevention measures to ensure children can learn, gather, and grow in safe environments.
