For the third consecutive year, the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) and Columbus City Schools (CCS) are providing unlimited transit access to high school students. The Educational Pass Program will be available to all CCS students in grades 9-12 for the upcoming school year. This program grants free access to COTA’s fixed-route lines, COTA Mainstream for students with special mobility needs, and COTA//Plus On-Demand service. The initiative will benefit approximately 13,000 CCS students.
COTA President/CEO Monica Téllez-Fowler highlighted the benefits of the continued partnership with Columbus City Schools, emphasizing that unlimited COTA access provides high school students with safe and efficient transportation to classes and extracurricular activities. This access also helps students explore public transportation as a means to higher education and job opportunities. Last year, over 6,800 students used the fixed-route service for more than 397,896 trips.
Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman emphasized the importance of transit passes for students who rely on public transportation for various needs, including work, family responsibilities, and extracurricular activities. The passes provide access to free COTA services and on-board Wi-Fi via Student Success Cards. Students must tap their cards on validators to use the service, with pick-ups and drop-offs at COTA transit stops rather than directly at schools.
