Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has announced new social studies initiatives aimed at integrating history, geography, and civics into reading and writing instruction for students. During his State of the State address, DeWine emphasized the need to strengthen social studies education, particularly in elementary schools.

As part of his two-year budget proposal, DeWine is seeking $1.5 million for the initiative. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce may partner with national experts or state university civics centers to create the curriculum. DeWine also proposed expanding Ohio history education across all grade levels, starting in kindergarten. Currently, students receive most of their Ohio history instruction in the fourth grade.

The budget proposal is under review in the Ohio General Assembly, with House Bill 96 expected to fund state government operations for the next two years. The legislature aims to finalize the budget by the end of June.
