As families prepare for holiday gatherings, a concerning trend is on the rise: an alarming increase in young children’s exposure to cannabis edibles. According to the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Cannabis Control (DCC), over 500 children under the age of six in Ohio were exposed to edibles from January through November 2024 a 30% jump compared to 2023.
This uptick, reported by the Central Ohio Poison Center, highlights the urgent need for safe storage practices, particularly during the festive season when homes are bustling with activity.
The Hidden Risks of Edibles
Cannabis edibles, often resembling candies or baked goods, can be enticing to young children who are unaware of the potential dangers. Adding to the risk, some intoxicating hemp products lack child-resistant packaging and may even contain harmful toxins, posing a dual threat to minors.
“Understanding and adhering to cannabis regulations is crucial to ensuring the safety of children during holiday gatherings,” said DCC Superintendent Jim Canepa. “Simple precautions can make all the difference in preventing unintentional exposure.”
Safe Storage: A Simple Solution
To minimize the risks, the DCC advises homeowners to store cannabis products securely, especially if children will be present. Lockboxes or safes are highly recommended to keep these items out of reach.
Be Proactive for a Safe Holiday
Awareness is key. Whether hosting or visiting family and friends, Ohioans are encouraged to:
- Check that all cannabis and hemp products are in child-resistant packaging.
- Store edibles in secure, inaccessible locations.
- Educate guests about the importance of keeping such products away from children.
The holidays are a time for joy and connection. By taking these preventive steps, families can ensure the season remains safe and stress-free for everyone involved.
