Horror Files: 84-Year-Old Ex-Political Candidate Jailed 21 Years After Police Find Child Sexual Abuse Images of Toddlers on Computer
An Ohio court has sentenced an 84-year-old former political candidate to up to 21 years in prison after investigators uncovered disturbing child sexual abuse material on his computer, including images involving children as young as two years old.
Ernest McCarthy of Toledo pleaded guilty to 15 second-degree felony offenses linked to the possession and reproduction of child sexual abuse material. The charges include nine counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, four counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, and two counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.
The case followed an investigation by the Toledo Police Department after authorities traced illicit digital files to McCarthy’s electronic devices. According to prosecutors, McCarthy acknowledged to investigators that child sexual abuse material would likely be found on his computer when officers executed a search warrant.
During sentencing, Lucas County Judge Stacy Cook described the images recovered as “horrific,” noting that some involved children as young as two years old. The judge imposed a prison term of 20 to 21 years.
Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates said the sentence reflects the gravity of crimes that involve the exploitation of children.
“These crimes exploit the most vulnerable members of Lucas County,” Bates said. “This sentence sends a clear message that those who possess and reproduce this material will be held accountable.”
McCarthy will also be classified as a Tier II sex offender and will be required to register for 25 years following his release from prison.
Court records show McCarthy previously ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio State Senate in 2018 and sought elected office in Toledo several times.
