Lucas County Children Services has earned national certification for its participation in Ohio START, a statewide initiative that supports families battling addiction.

“START certification for Lucas County is a huge deal,” said Keri Vebenstad, Lucas County’s Ohio START Supervisor. “It means that we are meeting or exceeding all of the standards for child welfare practice.”

Since launching in 2019, the program has supported 46 families and 88 children by pairing families with peer mentors in addiction recovery. This evidence-based approach has led to significant success, with research showing that mothers in the program achieve sobriety at nearly twice the rate of those outside it, and children in participating families are half as likely to enter foster care.

Lucas County is now the first metropolitan county in Ohio to earn this prestigious certification, joining only six counties statewide to reach this milestone.
