Woodcrest Elementary School Principal Yolanda Cooper’s educational philosophy centers on the concept of family. Since her arrival in 2021 at Columbus City Schools’ only year-round school, she has focused on fostering relationships among staff, students, parents, and community partners. As students returned to in-person learning after COVID-19, Cooper made her presence known by spending time in hallways, classrooms, and other areas to engage with students, staff, and parents, emphasizing her commitment as a supportive leader.
Principal Yolanda Cooper’s path to leadership is unconventional. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Akron and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University Portland. Cooper began her career in a chemical company, later coordinating an anti-drug coalition in Pennsylvania and working with youth in a talent search program at Penn State.
She then served as an academic advisor at the University of Cincinnati before becoming a high school dean and eventually a principal overseeing grades 7-12. Transitioning to elementary education, Cooper now leads Woodcrest Elementary, emphasizing the importance of early education in setting students up for future success. She believes that nurturing young learners lays a solid foundation for their academic journeys.
Principal Yolanda Cooper is deeply passionate about reading and actively encourages her students to engage with books throughout their day, from lining up with a book in hand to practicing comprehension during everyday tasks. She emphasizes that reading is essential for students’ future success.
Cooper also prioritizes community partnerships, regularly reaching out to local businesses for support and fostering connections with organizations that enhance reading and math programs. She values the neighborhood’s involvement, noting the annual gifts from the Pine Hills Civic Association. Nichelle Bigsbee, a community leader, commends Cooper for her advocacy and efforts to keep families engaged, highlighting her ability to make everyone feel valued. During National Principals Month, Cooper and her colleagues are recognized for their contributions to student success.
