Ronay Lyons, a University of Cincinnati alumna and first-generation graduate, initially faced financial barriers to achieving her college degree. She emphasizes the importance of providing affordable opportunities to all, having qualified for Section 8 housing assistance in the past. With support, she successfully graduated and now advocates for others.

Key Highlight:

  • Representative Greg Landsman (D-OH) has introduced legislation, H.R. 8925 (the Campus Housing Affordability Act), aimed at allowing eligible students to use Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) for both on- and off-campus housing, which is currently restricted. Landsman highlights that this change would particularly benefit first-generation students and those aging out of foster care, enhancing their educational outcomes.
  • The initiative addresses significant challenges: a national survey by the Hope Center for College, Community and Justice reveals that 48% of college students experience housing insecurity, with 14% facing homelessness. Lyons underscores the financial struggles of many students, who often have to abandon their educational goals due to housing costs.
  • University of Cincinnati President Neville Pinto underscores the transformative potential of higher education for students of color and first-generation students, who make up a significant portion of the campus community. Lyons emphasizes that expanding housing options through the legislation will not only support individual students but also enrich the broader community by increasing access to educational opportunities.
