Principal Mark Caudill of Oakland Park Traditional Alternative Elementary School sought to boost the school’s visibility by organizing a community event. To this end, he partnered with the Eta Nu Nu chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., which had received a $900 grant from the City of Columbus to support National Night Out—a program aimed at improving police-community relations and neighborhood unity. On August 6, the school and fraternity chapter hosted their first National Night Out event, marking a successful collaboration.
Antonio Caffey, vice president of the Eta Nu Nu chapter, highlighted their strong connection with the Linden community and their focus on local schools. Their recent National Night Out event, attended by about 50 families, featured food, a DJ, and various vendors such as the National Kidney Foundation and Chamberlain University.
The event included activities like distributing school supplies and literacy materials, as well as a bounce house and playground fun. Principal Mark Caudill praised the event for engaging current and prospective families and showcasing the school’s community involvement. Robert “Bill Varney from the Columbus Police Department also participated, distributing water bottles and interacting with residents.
Robert Varney highlighted the importance of events like National Night Out in breaking down the perception of police as merely enforcers, emphasizing their role as community members. Principal Mark Caudill noted that such events strengthen the school’s relationship with local law enforcement, who have previously participated in school activities. Caudill plans to make the event an annual tradition, aiming to enhance community engagement and ensure families feel safe and connected.
