Ohio Bill Seeks to Ban Tanning Bed Use for Children Under 16

Ohio legislators are considering a new bill that would prohibit businesses from allowing children younger than 16 to use tanning beds. Senate Bill 25, sponsored by Sen. Terry Johnson, R-Portsmouth, also aims to tighten restrictions for teens aged 16 to 18, who currently need parental consent.

The proposed legislation seeks to reduce the risk of skin cancer linked to UV exposure. Medical professionals, including the Ohio Dermatological Association and Ohio State Medical Association, have backed similar measures in the past.

Supporters, like oncologist Dr. Jeffery Sussman, argue that the bill is a necessary public health measure, comparing it to restrictions on cigarettes. However, opponents claim professional salons provide safe environments, and banning minors could drive them to riskier tanning methods.

Currently, 20 states and Washington, D.C., ban indoor tanning for those under 18, while 44 states, including Ohio, impose some restrictions. If passed, SB 25 would further limit youth access to tanning salons across the state.
