Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Children and Youth Director Kara B. Wente announced a major new initiative to improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality across the state.

The “Partner for Change” initiative will expand a proven model developed by Cradle Cincinnati, a Hamilton County-based nonprofit known for reducing infant deaths, into high-need communities throughout Ohio.

“Ohio recently hit its lowest infant mortality rate in two decades, but we know more needs to be done,” said Governor DeWine.

Cradle Cincinnati’s collaborative, community-based model has already helped reduce Hamilton County’s infant mortality rate by more than 30%, from 8.7 to 5.5 deaths per 1,000 live births.

New Grant Partners:

  • Lucas County: Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio (HCNO)

  • Cuyahoga County: First Year Cleveland

  • Franklin County: CelebrateOne

  • Montgomery County: Dayton Children’s Hospital

Today’s announcement occurred at the Boys and Girls Club of Toledo’s Homer Hanham Club in partnership with HCNO.

In addition to the health initiative, Governor DeWine also proposed a family-focused tax cut, providing up to $1,000 in relief per child under age seven. The plan is expected to benefit around 450,000 Ohio families, helping ease the financial pressures on young parents.
