Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed the “Protect All Students Act,” a law banning transgender students from kindergarten through college from using multi-person bathrooms aligning with their gender identities in public and private schools. The law, effective in 90 days, also mandates separate facilities based on gender assigned at birth for locker rooms and overnight accommodations.
The Republican-backed measure, signed without public announcement, has drawn criticism from Democrats, teachers’ unions, and civil rights groups. While proponents, including bill sponsor Republican state Sen. Jerry Cirino, argue it prioritizes safety and privacy, opponents view it as discriminatory. The law includes no specific enforcement mechanism.
