Ohio Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Make Computer Science Mandatory in High Schools

Ohio students may soon be required to complete a yearlong computer science course to graduate, under new bipartisan legislation expected to be introduced next week.

If passed, all Ohio high schools will be required to offer computer science classes starting in the 2027-2028 school year, with the class of 2032 being the first to graduate under the new requirement. Students would need to take a unit of computer science between grades 8 and 12, covering topics like programming, AI, networks, and cybersecurity.

Data shows Ohio lags behind neighboring states in computer science education—while 91% of Indiana high schools offer computer science, only 62% of Ohio high schools do. This legislation aims to better align Ohio’s education system with workforce demands in an increasingly tech-driven world.
