Ohio Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the significance of child care and education in his recent State of the State address, but a national report by the National Institute for Early Education Research reveals Ohio’s low ranking in preschool spending.
Ohio ranks 43rd in total preschool spending, highlighting nationwide disparities in access, quality, and funding for preschool education. The report underscores the need for increased funding to ensure high-quality early education programs for all children.
Despite recent funding increases, Ohio still has work to do in providing adequately funded early learning opportunities. Ohio has approximately 18,000 children enrolled in pre-K education, with a significant portion of school districts offering state-funded programs.
However, the state falls short in meeting benchmarks for teacher qualifications, class sizes, and staff-to-child ratios, indicating areas for improvement in early childhood education standards.
