Ohio School District Faces Questions Over Religious Program Access to School Facilities

A dispute over religious instruction in an Ohio school district is raising broader questions about child protection, inclusion and the safeguarding responsibilities of public schools.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) has asked Elmwood Local Schools in Northwest Ohio to stop allowing a religious programme, LifeWise Academy, to operate on school property during school hours, warning that the arrangement may violate constitutional guidelines and potentially expose students to social pressure and exclusion.
LifeWise Academy is a non-denominational Christian programme that provides Bible-based instruction to public school students through a “released time” system, where participating children leave regular classes for religious teaching during the school day. Under U.S. legal guidelines, such programmes must take place off school property, be privately funded and require parental consent.
Child protection advocates say the issue goes beyond legal technicalities. When religious activities occur in or around school facilities during the school day, students who do not participate may feel singled out, excluded or pressured by peers.
Reports from parents in some districts suggest that children who opt out of LifeWise programmes have experienced social ostracism or bullying, raising safeguarding concerns about the emotional wellbeing of students.
Experts emphasise that schools have a duty to create safe, inclusive environments where all children feel respected regardless of their religious beliefs or non-beliefs. Policies that appear to favour a particular religious programme risk undermining that neutrality and may unintentionally place some students in vulnerable social positions.
As debates continue, advocates say schools must carefully balance religious freedoms with their primary responsibility: protecting students’ rights, safety and wellbeing while ensuring equal treatment for every child in the learning environment.
