Ohio School Report Cards: How Local Districts Scored This Year

Source

Oakwood and Bellbrook-Sugarcreek schools once again ranked among the highest-performing districts both locally and statewide in Ohio’s latest school report cards, released Monday.

Other local districts also showed improvement. Springfield City Schools rose from two stars last year to 2.5 stars this year, while Jefferson Twp. Local Schools improved from 1.5 to two stars.

Dayton Public Schools, however, remained the lowest performing local district with a two-star rating, the same as in the past two years. Districts receiving the top five-star rating included Oakwood, Bellbrook, Mason, Centerville, Miami East, and Wayne Local.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce bases the overall ratings on five categories: achievement, gap closing, early literacy, graduation, and progress, with achievement and progress carrying the most weight.

While math scores across the state are on the rise and chronic absenteeism is declining, reading proficiency has stalled, with only 60.4% of students meeting the standard in English language arts, down slightly from last year.

ODEW Director Steve Dackin noted that progress is rarely linear, acknowledging that some measures may plateau before advancing further. He emphasized the importance of using the data to guide decisions that prioritize students’ needs.

At the heart of these results lies a reminder of a fundamental principle: every child has the right to quality education. Ensuring that right is met means working to close gaps, improve literacy, and provide all students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
