Ohio Spotlight for the Week: Sarah Harvan — Championing Child Advocacy Through Education and Service

In the heart of Summit County, Ohio, one woman has dedicated more than a decade to ensuring that the voices of abused and neglected children are heard loud and clear. This week, we proudly spotlight Sarah Harvan, MA, BA, an exceptional child safeguarding advocate and the Training Coordinator for the Summit County CASA/GAL Program.
With a robust academic foundation, Sarah holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Family and Child Development from the University of Akron, where her focus included Parent Education. Shortly after completing her graduate studies, she began shaping young minds as an Adjunct Professor at her alma mater, teaching courses that explored the complexities of child development and family dynamics from 2011 to 2020.
But Sarah’s passion extended beyond the classroom. In 2010, she began her journey with the CASA/GAL Program of Summit County, first as a volunteer, and by 2012, stepping into her current role as Training Coordinator. Her work involves equipping new volunteers with the knowledge and sensitivity required to advocate effectively for children navigating the juvenile court system. Under her guidance, CASA volunteers become not only the eyes and ears of the court but also steady, trusted voices for children facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances.
In addition to her primary role, Sarah has been volunteering with Child Advocates of Cuyahoga County since 2016, further cementing her commitment to safeguarding children across the region. Her leadership and insight have also contributed to the broader field: she is a graduate of the Child and Family Leadership Exchange program and recently assisted in writing a juvenile law textbook, helping shape the next generation of advocates and professionals.
Sarah Harvan exemplifies the kind of quiet, consistent leadership that builds stronger, safer communities for children. Her blend of academic rigor, grassroots service, and institutional impact makes her a standout in Ohio’s child welfare landscape.
“When you train a child advocate, you don’t just teach policy, you empower them to walk alongside a child in their darkest hour, with knowledge, empathy, and unwavering purpose.” — Sarah Harvan
We celebrate Sarah Harvan not just for her role, but for her relentless dedication to the cause of justice, safety, and healing for Ohio’s children. Thank you for all you do.
