Ohio State Turns to Off-Campus Housing for Returning Students Due to Large Freshman Class

Ohio State University has housed some students at the Point on Lane, a private apartment complex across from campus, due to the large freshman class. The university is providing similar services there as it would in a residence hall. Sophomore Emily Lynch, informed in mid-June about the housing shortage, was offered a spot in this off-campus complex. She appreciated the arrangement, noting that she now has a private room instead of sharing with three roommates.

President Ted Carter was questioned about the impact of this housing crunch on the university following the Convocation Ceremony. He praised the university’s flexibility and management of the housing situation, noting that accommodating around 17,000 students in five days is a significant achievement. He commended the student life team for their effective handling of the situation. Ohio State has previously used off-campus housing, last doing so in 2016. Students at the Point on Lane apartments are provided with similar amenities to those in on-campus housing, including internet and utilities.

Emily Lynch and other students moved to the Point on Lane have found the arrangement preferable. They appreciate having private space and proximity to classes, which they view as a better deal compared to their previous dorm experience in Morrill Tower. Katie Gibson, a freshman, described the crowded conditions in Morrill Tower, where the number of students per suite has increased from 10 to 16, causing issues with limited shower facilities.
