‘So Many Things That Could Go Wrong’ | Walnut Hills Student Petitions to Ban New Phone Pouch Policy

Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) has introduced a policy requiring students to lock their cell phones in magnetic pouches throughout the school day to minimize distractions and boost academic performance. The policy has been implemented in most high schools, and early reports suggest it has led to improvements, such as a decrease in 9th grade failures at Hughes High School.

However, some students, like Aidan Mollohan from Walnut Hills High School, have raised concerns about potential negative impacts, including difficulties in communication during emergencies and disruptions to students’ daily routines. Mollohan has started a petition against the policy, which has gathered over 2,800 signatures, citing worries about missed calls to parents and potential issues during emergencies like school shootings.

CPS officials acknowledged these concerns and are working to address them, including creating emergency plans and considering adjustments to the policy. The district plans to review the implementation and make necessary changes to ensure the policy supports student safety and well-being effectively.
